<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px;
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer;
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer;

It was a real privilege to have been able to have worked so closely with these people who had such an interest and commitment to learning these kayak skills.
They do have a raw talent and I am sure picked things up much quicker than many folk I have introduced in the past.
Kayaking with them enabled me, despite our lack of common language to feel we had really connected – and I had made some good friends.
Certainly they appreciated the opportunity and the time I spent with them and it was quite an emotional parting.

<img style="display:block;
Next summer I again plan to spend some time with folk from this group and offer some further support – Lars, the young hunter with his fathers kayak is keen to take me hunting, should the opportunity arise.
Kristina – a young mum, has set herself the challenge of gaining suitable skills and experience, so she can safely paddle from Tasiilaq to visit her relatives in Isortoq.
This for her would be a journey of several days – being aware of the risk, she has already spoken with her uncle who will, when she is ready, accompany her in a support boat.

Many thanks to the Gino Watkins Memorial Trust for their support with this project.

Every one was very aware of this and happy to be seeing it in such amazing conditions.
Progress however was made and we had a great time exploring several areas I had previously been unable to visit and we always found enough drift wood to have a fine camp fire and enjoyed a wee dram at the end of the day.
It was not possible to return to Tasiilaq as planned – infact the last couple of days were a struggle just getting back to Kulusuk in time for the flights home and on one occasion we all had to get out and drag our kayaks over several large flat pans of ice, jumping the gaps and continuing to the edge and open water.

I get weather updates through my Sat phone and knew we were in for a big blow – this came as expected and we just made it to a great hut in time to spend the next 2 days reading and festering in its relative comfort, as a full gale ragged outside.
I was paranoid that although lashed down the kayaks would be blown away – on inspection they were so full of rain water I knew they were not going anywhere and so was able to relax until it was time to move on.
A great paddle though the channel of Ikasak, which was almost impassable with ice brought us back out to Ege in the Ammassalik Fjord. Conditions and the weather continued to steadily improve as we started to make our way back to Tasiilaq.
We had experienced it all – impassable ice, thick ice, sun, rain, gales, mirror calm conditions, crystal clear waters and some fantastic wilderness campsites.

After everyone had returned home I serviced all the kayaks and equipment, ready for 2012 and then spent some time working with local Greenlandic people from Tasiilaq who were keen to experience some kayaking.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KU_shXBiUls/TdgZJ3ia-UI/AAAAAAAAAK8/44d4dOiUC_w/s320/Final%2BFlag%2Blogo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5609260993207793986" />
The trip going out to Greenland this summer is full and folk are now well on the way through their final preparations - thick sea ice still along the coast from the winter will present us with some challenging and exciting conditions.
The late departure of the sea ice will increase our chance of a polar bear encounter and it is likely that we will have to adopt a waking watch system - taking it in turns to keep an eye open, while the others get some sleep.
The Johanna Christina (local supply boat) has been booked for a kayak drop off in Kuummiut should the ice delay or departure from Tasiilaq.

There are places available on the final trip in August this summer - although at this stage it is unlikely anyone will sign up before I depart for Greenland on the 29th June.
Trips in 2012 are scheduled and several places are already booked up - these should be full and the trips closed by December 2011 - otherwise the flights go up and consequently bump up the trip costings. he would give us all the information he had, put forward a few suggested options and then we, as a group, made the decisions on where to go, how quickly and where to stop for the night.

We deviated from this once – and that was when Martin decided that conditions were not safe for continuing with the original plan – based on his considerable experience of the ice and how quickly things can change out there.

During our journey, we explored several abandoned settlements, went for walks up into the hills and discovered old graves and mysteriously arranged stones. We were taken with Martin’s knowledge of the area and his obvious love and enthusiasm for this corner of the world. It was clear that he enjoyed sharing these with us.

We felt that we got a huge amount out of our time in Greenland and very definitely satisfied our value for money criterion …. and our iceberg spotting requirements!

<img style="float:right; especially for the first group who had extremely thick sea ice – once we landed at the airport in Kulusuk - the normally 45 minutes journey to Ammassalik in the shuttle boat took over 5 hrs and on several occasions during the journey I thought we would be spending the night out amongst the ice.
As usual our first day was spent exploring the village, visiting the museum, shopping for food and tracking down and collecting the 3 extra Nordkapp kayaks which had been shipped out this year. Kayaks and kit came out of my store and everyone started packing and getting ready for a good start the following day.
Once we paddled out of Tasiilaq, we were chased by ever-encroaching sea ice, eventually as far as Kuummiut. This ice came in from the sea and completely filled Ammassalik fjord and surrounding inlets. The phase from here on in was “ chocker!"

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_wbG0VslCmcU/THkU2Ak0GDI/AAAAAAAAAFU/P8Vn6uexInY/s320/P7130257.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510458537164412978" />

Our initial plan to paddle into Ikask was thwarted and having spent some time involuntarily travelling on a large ice berg (having quickly pulled all the kayaks out to save them from being damaged) we escaped back into open water and finally made it to the village of Kuummiut. This is one of the nicest villages in the area with a population of about 250 – from here we took the inside route to the old abandoned USA airbase at Ikateq and spent a day exploring the remains, ruins and dump.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_wbG0VslCmcU/THkWsSuhBOI/AAAAAAAAAFk/Z_3BB4DACtc/s320/DSCF1880.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510460569261507810" />
During the trip we were able to explore many old settlement sites, which I had previously not been able to visit – the campsites were stunning and navigating and travelling through the very thick ice was both challenging and amazing.
Seal launching – for real – from icebergs, back into open leads was an experience I am sure folk will not forget quickly.
We had all experienced some amazing ice and as a result paddled in conditions not normally experienced here at this time of year.
We later found out that other paddlers in the same area during this time had spent their time on land – ice bound.
The trip was a great success and several have now booked again for next summer.

Trip two
Unfortunately one of our team lost his luggage, when the name tag came off in Glasgow, and ended up in Greenland with no kit – luckily I have spare gear in the container for this eventuality, so we were able to sort him out for the first few days – all his gear then arrived on the Monday.
As the ice had previously been so packed in the Ammassalik fjord, we decided to head west towards Isortoq.
One of the team was then ill with a sick bug and as a result we decided to take a more leisurely route inland, so as to approach Sermilik fjord by way of Tint.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_wbG0VslCmcU/THkXTZ9zTSI/AAAAAAAAAFs/3nz-OnNSd24/s320/File0171.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510461241219566882" />

The going was good with none of the ice problems from the previous trip – however – once we crossed Sermilik from Tinit we found we were unable to paddle safely on the west side of the fjord.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_wbG0VslCmcU/THkY6Uwa_yI/AAAAAAAAAF0/B_XmHN_B80k/s320/DSCF1946.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510463009347796770" />
(Too much ice packed in with huge bergs growling and cracking as they dropped ice into the water around them)
We crossed back and headed north to the top of the fjord – however the ice was so thick we only got a couple of days in before being forced to retrace our route.
We now headed south – hoping to paddle round the south end of Ammassalik Island and return to Tasiilaq having circumnavigated the island.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_wbG0VslCmcU/THka-PpJu5I/AAAAAAAAAF8/b7kKMX3h0eo/s320/IMGP0338.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510465275717860242" />

We reached the ghost village of Ikateq and were able to explore the settlement and visit the abandoned school and church – these have been left undisturbed since the day they were last used, 1986, books on the desk and lesson’s on the black board!
That night we found a great campsite about an hour south of Ikateq and continued our unbroken tradition of a campfire every evening.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_wbG0VslCmcU/THkTJ4gYaeI/AAAAAAAAAFM/u5WZSYAtFA0/s320/File0184.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510456679572466146" />

The next morning brought a head wind but looked good and we paddled through some huge Antarctic type ice shelf’s (these had travelled down from the NW of Greenland, via the north pole) and had lunch in a hut on the south tip of Ammassalik island – the bay the hut was in was like something out of “The land that time forgot”.
From here we made it round the corner, through some quite lumpy and confused water with squalls building and coming down from the cliffs - Quite a paddle, with no landings for 12 miles, 4 1/2 hrs.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_wbG0VslCmcU/THkQrinidfI/AAAAAAAAAE8/LuzhNxKjlJ0/s320/DSC04291.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510453959277573618" />(Mark Tozer helped lead the second trip with me)

Once back outside Tasiilaq we decided to take a days rest to get a shower and do some laundry and a bit of shopping.
We had some days left before the flight home so decided to paddle back out into Ammassalik fjord and cross over to Kulusuk.
I knew would give us the chance of a couple of days paddling amongst whales and evenings with good campsites for whale watching (Humpback and Minki whales) they came very close and we had some fantastic views.
Just north of Kulusuk village we intended to camp by a glacier which still comes down to the sea – a fantastic spot.
That evening this calved and sent out a huge wave, which proceeded to wash the rocks clean, which several of the group had been cooking on.
I had warned them!!
No one was in any danger, however meals, stores, stoves and kit were lost.
Fortunately everything that floated was recovered by kayak and once the tide went down everything else was retrieved.
Once back in Tasiilaq I spent time maintaining the kayaks and equipment, it had been a hard summer on the kit.
The group had a great day hill walking and reached several peaks, giving fantastic views of the area we had been in and the ice stretching for miles out to sea.
It had been another great trip – my first to cross Sermilik and explore the old settlement on the far side of Tinit, which is where folk lived in turf houses, until 1956, when they were re housed in the new wooded houses built for them in Tinit.
It was also good to get round the south tip of Ammassalik Island – however we will do it at the start of a trip next time so we have time to wait for a more favourable weather forecast.
As usual a day at the end of the trip was spent in Iceland. Folk doing their own thing - visiting the Blue lagoon, geysers, hot tubs, waterfalls and pools – oh yes and Pubs!

Thanks to everyone who helped and supported - making 2010 another memorable summer. The first up into the top of Sermilik fjord, through very thick pack ice. paddling and we saw several whales and many more seals than usual - the elusive polar bear was not seen, although six were reported in our area while we were there and one was shot by local hunters at a hut two days before (Lake Fjord) where Watkins died in 1932.

NEW ROCKPOOL WEB SITE

Mike has at last updated the Rockpool website and I am pleased to say several of my photo's have been incorporated into it.
Rockpool continue to develop and manufacture quality sea kayaks in a range of sizes to meet your requirements - the Alaw and Menai 18 were successfully put to the test during last years Greenland expeditions. www.rockpoolkayaks.com

Extra Greenland trip for 2009

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290004890502441170" style="FLOAT: left; Sorry no picture. But visit http://www.palmequipmenteurope.com/ to find out more.
The Nova and Kola are high leg neoprene boots like wellies - with a good ankle strap for security when walking or hauling kayaks.
They are well made and warm / dry, so long as you don't go over the top.
In the past I have used wellies but find them too cold.
I have used both types - the Nova is a little tighter on the calf but I can still pull it over my dry suit and thermal layers.
If the top strap is done up they are fine if swimming - water does get inside.
The Nova with the fabric top is a bit quicker to dry / air out.
I found them less bulky than the lace up Chota boots and far superior to the Chota pull on boots we used on our 2006 Greenland trip.
Cheaper too!!
I recommend you ask Santa for some if needing to replace your footwear this winter!

Shetland kayak Base

I am pleased to announce the recent link with Nigel Dennis www.seakayakinguk.com this remote area and experiencing the local culture.
Some of the highlights were kayaking amongst the many huge icebergs which travel south down the coast, visiting outlying Greenlandic communities where few people speak Danish or English, seeing Fin and Humpback Whales at close quarters from the kayaks, exploring the site of an old abandoned American DEW line station and camping at the mouth of the Karale glacier which we discovered has receded inland over 5 miles since the maps were last updated.
As before the weather was generally good with plenty of sun for that perfect Greenlandic "neck up" tan.
The ROCKPOOL kayaks performed extremely well and even the less experienced boat packers found they had room to spare after loading two weeks food and equipment in the Alaw's. Everyone who paddled them thought they were stable, fast and manoverable, had plenty of storage and were very comfortable to spend the best part of their day in.
Thanks go to all those who took part for helping make it a truly
