There was no sign of the whale when rescue divers got to the scene - with a bit of luck it managed to break free or the ropes chafed through on rocks and broke.
Although a very rare occurrence, it came to light that a similar entrapment occurred last summer on the west side of Shetland - on that occasion the lobster fishermen managed to cut the whale free.

During the summer months Shetland is well known for sightings of killer whales - kayakers regularily see them and we have been able to get quite close.
